ANXIETY & DEPRESSION

Clients at Core counseling often find relief from by learning to identify situations or thoughts that trigger anxiety, how they experience anxiety in their bodies and learning how to calm their bodies and minds, and regain a sense (or discover) a sense of peace, balance and focus Cognitive Behavioral therapy and mindfulness training are often effective in being learning to reduce anxiety and regain a sense of effectiveness.

Depression, like anxiety, shows up in many different forms for many different reasons. Counseling can help clients find relief from symptoms by learning to identify negative thought patterns, identifying negative core beliefs and learning strategies to challenge and change those beliefs, creating neuroplastic changes in the brain that open up new perspectives and creativity.

 

 

TRAUMA

Many people experience distressing life events, or an accumulation of “traumas” throughout the course of their lives. Often, people who suffer from complex trauma cannot point to a single or identifiable traumatic event, as can those who meet the criteria for Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the accumulation of difficult, stressful events over time takes a toll physically and psychologically, often resulting in a range of symptoms including: hyperarousal, disturbances in cognition, intrusive memories, anxiety, panic, depression, difficulty with interpersonal relationships, and more. At Core Counseling, we often work with and treat people who suffer from complex trauma through a variety of approaches, tailored to each individual’s needs.

 

 

GRIEF & LOSS

Learning to cope with grief, which often goes unrecognized, is essential to every person. Grief often leaves people feeling alone and isolated. Counseling can help people learn to understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy grief, and find needed support.

 

 

ADJUSTMENT

Individuals (and families) can experience feelings of sadness, hopelessness, loss and physical symptoms in the face of life transitions or challenges, including moving, divorce or separation, new job or starting college. Even when transitions are positive - marriage, addition of a new family member by birth or adoption - learning to navigate change can feel overwhelming. Counseling can  help individuals focus on strengths and positive qualities, build resilience and foster healthy self-esteem, and reaffirm healthy choices.

 

 

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE ISSUES

Many people strive to live a healthy lifestyle but are suffering physically and/or mentally. At Core Counseling, we offer health coaching and counseling to help people make connections between health behaviors, mental health and overall well-being. Health coaching and specific counseling techniques can help people make lasting changes that help alleviate or eliminate symptoms and create lasting change.

 

 

COUPLES & FAMILIES

Many (if not most) couples and families today experience challenges on multiple fronts: effective discipline, communication, stress, parenting styles, divorce adjustment and blended families, gaming addiction, new  baby, financial problems, chronic illness, to name a few. Core counseling strives to help couples and families learn relationship skills to face challenges and discover love, forgiveness and companionship.

 

 

ADOPTION

Adoptive families experience common challenges including that shape their family, including grief, separation and loss, self-esteem and identity, attachment issues and school or mental health challenges. Core Counseling helps families find strategies that post-adoption issues, such as Grief, separation and loss, to self-esteem and identity, attachment issues, school challenges and other issues.

ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES (ACE)

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are stressful childhood events, such as physical, sexual or emotional abuse or neglect, exposure to violence, addictions or mental health issues within families, family members who are incarcerated and other events that place children at risk for stress-related physical or mental illnesses in adulthood. EMDR
(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EDMR is a type of integrative psychotherapy that helps clients process difficult or traumatic memories. Originally developed as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, EMDR has proven helpful in treating a range of issues such as anxiety, panic, grief, pain, addictions and body dysmorphic disorder. CBT
(COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY)

CBT focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings and actions, and aims at helping clients become more aware of negative thought patterns that influence behavior.

 

 

DBT
(DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY)

DBT was developed by Marsha Linehan in 1980s to treat people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT combines Cognitive Behavioral techniques for emotional regulation and reality testing with distress tolerance skills, acceptance and intentional awareness of thoughts and feelings in the present (mindfulness). DBT focuses on building skills in four areas including mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT is an evidence-based technique that has proven effective in  treating individuals who suffer from BPD, as well as people who suffer from symptoms and behaviors associated with mood disorders and self-injury.

 

 

MINDFULNESS TECHNIQUES

Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment, without judgment, and without clinging to it. Core Counseling clients become competent learning how to observe and experience reality as it is, and to be more intentional about their thoughts and actions. These skills, along with other techniques that foster concentration and focus, can dramatically help clients take control of their minds and choose to develop and activate the healthy, rational, and creative parts of their brain through neuroplasticity. 

 

 

HEALTH COACHING

Health coaching uses evidence-based interventions and strategies to help clients make behavioral and lifestyle changes in support of health goals. Health coaching often works in conjunction with physicians’ recommendations for lifestyle changes.
